Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge has scored three goals in his last four matches, and his goal in the Merseyside derby made it 50 goals in 87 games for the Reds.
With injuries to Christian Benteke, Danny Ings and Divock Origi, the latest Liverpool striker who faces a few weeks out with ankle ligament damage, the onus will be on Sturridge to produce the goals.
The England international said his aim is to reach a 100 goals for the Reds.
“I won’t play it down and say I’m not happy I’ve done so well so far with the club, but it is onwards and upwards,” he said after reaching 50.
“It is important to understand now the next aim is 100 goals. Now 50 has gone it is on to the next game and hopefully I can add to that.”
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had this to say of Sturridge, “Of course the first job of a striker is to score goals, but you cannot score in each game.”
“Even Gerd Muller, the most famous and best German striker we ever had, scored something like 600, but there were a few games where he didn’t score.”
“Daniel has scored goals in the last few games and he had some more wonderful moments when he was a real threat to other teams.”
“When Daniel was fit I was always happy with his performance. I am not interested in public opinions.”
